Sorry about the photo quality, but it was the best one I could find.  Audiotrak, makers of some fine audio products out of Korea have this amazing miniature microphone that delivers some amazing crisp clarity for about the same price as a protective phone case.  ATM10-i smart microphone ($35), fits right in the 3.5mm headphone jack and can be used with iOS or Android.  Recommended apps to run it are Tape Machine for Android and Clear Record for iOS.  It has gold plated leads, an aluminum body, and also comes quipped with a foam windscreen.

It does not, however work with all devices, but it is clearly not just for smart phones.  It can also be used on tablets, and with all those new studio apps crashing up the market, it could do a pretty amazing job recording sounds, samples, and possibly, even vocals, but that might be pushing it a bit too hard.  Again, for the price and its size, I don’t think you can get much better.
