Although it looks like a piece of hunting gear, TufRack ($250-$300) is a sturdy 2-piece kick-ass bike rack that will withstand some of the toughest transitional treks.  The only downside is that it is designed for vehicles with a hitch mount.  Other than that, it is simple to install and can easily accommodate up to four bikes.  I personally prefer the hitch mount because it gives you direct access to your trunk, but you will look like a beast on the road.  Oh, and make sure those yellow cabs don’t rear end you…
