RIO RANT: The Cell Phone Market

I am an avid follower of technology, and have always enjoyed the paths laid out to make our lives easier as we transform ourselves into highly efficient humanoids, but a growing trend has been bugging the SHIT out of me: THE RAPID PUSH of CELL PHONES ONTO THE MARKETPLACE.

Let me iterate.

You buy a current phone on the market, and in 2-3 months it gets old and replaced with a newer model.  Well OK, maybe replaced seems a bit harsh, but if you look at how many models RIM (Blackberry), Apple, Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG have released in the last 2 years, it gets a bit ridiculous and makes me feel like the phone I just bought is already yesterdays news!  We are at a point where everything is at our fingertips: Internet, Facebook, Video chat, texting, etc.  I mean, are we really that fucking advanced! Do we really need to see eachother through a video phone at every instant.  Is that little handheld device the bane of our social existence???  Is texting/tweeting slowly replacing the main reason we buy cell phones in the first place: to talk!

It irritates me.

We have all this technology harnessed in cell phone usage, but what about all the little things like energy costs, traffic, transportation, fresher food and customer care.  It feels like they’re moving at a snails pace when compared to that of the IPad 2; which is basically an IPad (1) with a camera; something that needed to be revised since its inception about a year and a half ago when the same camera technology was readily available. So wait- let me get this straight, Apple cannot cobine the IPhone and the IPad into one device?  I own a bluetooth that runs on 1.fucking something… I guess it should be able to handle calls through an IPad !

Oh, and if your purchase if over 3 years old, some of these companies won’t even give you the time of day!  They always will tell you it is incompatible or discontinued technology, or “the current operating system does not support your device.”

Just how many times do we have to deal with updates and revisions before they get it right????  Even the video game market is catching this wave as well… Now, they are revising systems along with game sequels.

In my book, consumers are turning into suckers- sorry…  These large companies make minor revisions and modifications and we are sold.  Done.  I see people on E-Bay all the time selling off an item they just purchased a few months ago, just to get a newer model.  My friend just bought a new LED TV 1080P, but he does not even mind that his cable box doesn’t produce a higher resolution than 1080i…go figure?

Face it- technology has been turning into a very expensive subscription service.  Even your LCD TV will probably sound like old news as I type this.

So please (insert company name here), STOP MAKING A NEW CELL PHONE EVERY MONTH !!! IT IS SILLY AND IT IS BRAINWASHING PEOPLE AND TAKING A CRAP ON OUR ENVIRONMENT.
